The Great Switch for Creation
The ‘Great Switch for Creation’ is a simple idea with real urgency. It is about making a conscious move away from ways of living that harm the earth and towards choices that are sustainable, affordable, and rooted in care for what God has made. Here in Wales, that message lands close to home. We live among hills, rivers, farms, and coastlines that shape our daily lives and our sense of belonging.
Across the Church in Wales, and alongside the wider work of the Welsh Government and schemes like Eco Church, there is a growing awareness that this is not just about the environment in the abstract. It is about the rising cost of energy, the pressure on rural livelihoods, and the need to use our resources wisely.
One of the most encouraging aspects of the Great Switch is that it often saves money as well as reducing impact. Many churches are already seeing this. Switching to LED lighting can significantly cut electricity bills. Reviewing heating systems, even making small adjustments to timing and zoning, can reduce costs in buildings that are expensive to run. Choosing a renewable energy tariff can sometimes be cost-neutral or even cheaper over time.
Churchyards offer another opportunity. Allowing parts of the grass to grow longer reduces mowing costs and supports wildlife at the same time. Simple actions like planting wildflowers or creating small habitats do not require large budgets but can make a visible difference.
At a community level, the same principle applies. Sharing lifts to services cuts fuel costs. Hosting repair cafés helps people save money by fixing rather than replacing items. Using reusable materials at events reduces ongoing expenses. These are not grand gestures. They are steady, practical steps that make sense financially as well as environmentally.
What matters is that we begin, and that we do so together. The Great Switch is not about perfection. It is about making better choices where we can, and discovering that those choices often bring both financial relief and a renewed sense of purpose.
