Diary of a Retired Parson
Back in the fold
Christopher Lewis-Jenkins feels useful again
I presided at Mass and preached at Bosherston in South West Pembrokeshire on the fourth Sunday of Epiphany and I remember saying that "old age represents, to some people, washed up and useless" and I must admit that's how I felt when I retired in 2020.
I didn't want to retire, so to be pushed out, if you like, was very hard for me to accept. I am now responsible for the services and occasional offices for three churches and I now feel "fulfilled again".
What a joy to receive an invitation to the enthronement of our new bishop Dorrien. What a joy to be part of the church once again. what a joy to feel wanted. I know it's part of my make-up and that's how I felt. We are struggling with clergy numbers and I pray that our new bishop will have some plan to encourage people to put themselves forward to discern what God wants of them, and also not forget those who have given and still are giving their lives in service of God's people in this diocese.
