Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Statement sent to all clergy

We are sad to announce that Bishop Joanna is currently on sick leave. In her absence in order to ensure that the Diocese functions, she has made the three territorial archdeacons of St Davids, Carmarthen and Cardigan her Commissaries. In the first instance clergy are asked to contact their territorial archdeacon in any matter.

Please pray for Bishop Joanna at this time and for her recovery and clergy are asked to notify their congregations of this news. Please pray also for the three Bishop’s Commissaries and the rest of the Senior Staff as they lead the Diocese during this period. The Bishop’s Senior Team will continue to work together during this time. We will continue to provide updates on Bishop’s recovery when we have them.
