Advent

Advent means ‘coming’ and is the special four-week period leading up to Christmas. It is a time to prepare for the celebration of Jesus’s birth but also for his coming in glory at the end of time.

Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

The Church in Wales is putting together a short Advent course for 2024. Digital Content producer Georgia Day explains what’s in store.

'O Come Let Us Adore Him’ is a short advent course designed to strengthen your faith throughout the festive period! It will accompany you all the way from the beginning of Advent through to Epiphany. It consists of an introduction by the Archbishop of Wales followed by six full sessions, each led by one of the diocesan Bishops.

You can complete this course by yourself, or in small groups and communities. All of the sessions will begin with a video, which will include the Bishop discussing a passage of scripture, two lay people talking about how the themes of the passage relate to their own lives, and discussion questions for you to take forward in your study together.

Bishop Dorrien will lead the session for Christmas Day, to be held on December 16th, and will look at Luke 2: 1-20.

A taster of the course will be shown at the September Governing Body in Lampeter and the accompanying videos and materials will become available in late October or early November. The whole series will be made available from then so that they can be used whenever is best for any group. We hope that you enjoy it!
