Throwing a lifeline to young families

This has been a lifeline for me; it has given me confidence and a strong network of support.

This powerful quote from a young parent in Carmarthenshire perfectly encapsulates the heart and purpose of the work we do at Plant Dewi. Vicky Thomas and Carys Davies explain how.

Plant Dewi Young Families

Through our Young Parent Project, we aim to provide not only practical support, but also reassurance, connection, and a sense of belonging for young families.

We currently run two young parent groups, one in Carmarthen and one in Ammanford. These groups offer a welcoming, safe space where young parents can drop in, connect with others in similar situations, and receive ongoing support from dedicated staff.

Alongside this, parents can enjoy a wide range of activities designed to build confidence and wellbeing. Babies and toddlers benefit greatly from opportunities to play and learn together in a supportive nurturing environment.

We provide healthy lunches and snacks in both groups to support families in making nutritious food choices. The provision of healthy meals plays an important role in helping families eat well while learning about the value of a balanced diet and good nutrition.

Sessions include creative crafts through mindfulness, cooking and team-building activities, as well as practical workshops covering topics such as debt awareness, internet safety, health and wellbeing, and support with returning to work, education, or volunteering.

Families are also given opportunities to take part in trips organised by Plant Dewi, including visits such as our Botanic Garden event, helping to create positive shared experiences and lasting memories.

Community connection is a key part of our approach. We work closely with local communities and actively encourage young parents to take part in local events. The Ammanford group, for example, enjoyed the annual Christingle and Easter celebrations with the local church with key people regularly popping in throughout the year for a cuppa and a catch-up with local families, helping to strengthen relationships and reduce isolation.

In addition to group support, we offer one-to-one support across Carmarthenshire. This service is tailored to each young parent’s individual needs and can be a vital lifeline for those living in rural or isolated areas who may find it difficult to attend group sessions. One-to-one support can include baby massage, as well as guidance and signposting around housing, benefits, and other practical concerns.

Through all aspects of our work, Plant Dewi remains committed to empowering young parents, building confidence, and creating strong, supportive networks that help families thrive.
