Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Evangelism

‘Evangelion’ means ‘good news’. Evangelism is about sharing the good news of Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection in the hope that others may come to believe in and follow Jesus.

The Church Growth Fund, set up by the Church in Wales in 2023, is investing £100 million over ten years to provide “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to resource confident and consistent evangelism” across the Province. How is the money being spent? And what sort of projects might find favour?

There are two tiers of funding. The first, Tier 1, is for grant applications up to £10,000, mainly from LMAs, for work which is both innovative locally and replicable nationally. The second, Tier 2, is for grant applications for more than £10,000. Applications may only be made by individual dioceses, dioceses working in partnership or the six cathedrals as a group.

St Davids Diocese is actively considering submitting applications for both Tier 1 and Tier 2 funding. The most advanced of these is a Tier 2 application to support Music Directors and the development of church music and outreach across the Diocese.

A Planning Group comprised of clergy and staff from the archdeaconries, the Cathedral and people with professional expertise and knowledge of the subject matter meets regularly to determine the form the application should take. It is expected that a formal application will be submitted to the Representative Body and approved by December 2025.
