Determination, achievement and optimism

Far from home, Benjamin Rwizibuka, Pobl Dewi’s erstwhile correspondent from our Companion Diocese of Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, feels positive about the future
Last September, I fulfilled a long-held academic aspiration by enrolling in the Agroforestry and Food Security MSc programme at Bangor University. This master's degree offers a detailed understanding of agroforestry as part of a sustainable food production system, covering both environmental and social contexts. However, the journey to this achievement was far from straightforward.
The process of getting to Bangor from DRC proved to be long, stressful and expensive. Between the complex immigration procedures and the university's rigorous recruitment process, I spent more than six months navigating various requirements and paperwork. Despite the challenges, the opportunity to pursue this specialised programme made the arduous journey worthwhile.
Bangor is a beautiful place with its scenic landscape and serene environment. However, it can sometimes feel quite lonely. The quietness of the town, especially during the evenings, can be in stark contrast to the bustling life I was used to back home. Although I talk to my family almost every day, which helps alleviate some of the homesickness, there are moments when I miss the physical presence and the comfort of being surrounded by loved ones.
Academically, I am doing well in my classes. I have completed four modules so far, each one providing me with valuable knowledge and skills that are crucial for my future career. The coursework has been intensive, but it has also been incredibly enriching. I have learned a lot about sustainable agricultural practices, food security challenges and innovative solutions to ensure a stable food supply for the growing global population.
Looking ahead, I am excited about the prospect of graduating and entering the job market. The field of agriculture and food security is more important than ever and I am eager to contribute to this vital sector. My goal is to work in an organisation that focuses on sustainable agriculture, helping to develop and implement strategies that can improve food security and support communities around the world.
While the journey has its ups and downs, I am grateful for the experiences and the growth I have achieved so far. The challenges have made me more resilient, and the successes have fuelled my passion for my field of study. I am looking forward to the future with optimism and determination, ready to make a positive impact in the world of agriculture and food security.
