Anglican

Anglicans form the family of Christians closely related to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Whilst tracing their inheritance back to Christ and the earliest Christians and to the ancient Roman Catholic church, the sixteenth century Reformation was a crucial moment for Anglicanism.

Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Take a Break

The insurance company Ecclesiastical has announced that their Ministry Bursary Awards (MBAs) are available once again.

The MBAs have been running for more than 35 years and are open to all members of the Anglican clergy, providing financial support for sabbatical breaks and projects planned for 2025.

The fundamental purpose of a sabbatical is for the applicant to have time for soulful rest and refreshment that is purposeful and balanced. Over the years, funding has been made available for a diverse range of projects from ministerial development, pilgrimages or even the pursuit of lifelong dreams.

Criteria

  • All applicants must have been in ordained ministry for at least 10 years and not taken a sabbatical in the previous seven.
  • Awards are provided for extended study leave only (fees for a course during the extended study leave may be considered).
  • Entries must be made using the forms provided.
  • It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure the application and endorsement forms are submitted.
  • We are particularly keen to see more sabbaticals which aim to support the drive for net zero carbon.

All applicants must complete the application forms by 30 September 2024. Completed forms should be emailed to mba@ecclesiastical.com

Judging of the 2025 entries will take place during November 2024 and awards will be made in December 2024.

The amount given for individual awards will depend on the value to the individual applicant, the benefit to the wider church, financial support already promised from other sources and the strength of the endorsement from the Bishop or Archdeacon supporting the plans.
