Judges, Kings, Patriarchs & Prophets
Lorna Bradley takes a walk through the Old Testament
Walk Through the Bible has been active for 40 years and in their statement of faith they introduce themselves by what they do, and through this they reach 130 countries worldwide.
Working in schools, colleges and churches, they teach scripture with the belief that getting people excited about it will open the door for the spirit to work in them.
They popped in to Burry Port at the end of April to deliver their adult version of Old Testament mini – 40 bible stories from the Old Testament which piece together the key scriptural aspects and link the key characters in a way to indicate God’s presence in their lives and God’s influence and mighty hand in the development of God’s people.
Tom – the presenter from the UK head office– was greeted by over 40 attendees from Swansea and Brecon, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion with ages ranging from 11 to 80 years old – after all the scripture continues to reveal!
This fun and active day started with a bit of geography – becoming familiar with the countries and routes taken by the patriarchs, kings, queens and prophets as they battled for land, for freedom and to answer God’s call.
Starting at the beginning with Genesis we slipped through the stories of nationhood, slavery and freedom and of the reclaiming of God’s land by the warriors (Joshua). Then the judges who tried to hold the law together, the Kings who were whole heartedly for God (David) and the ones who turned their back (Saul). The lessons learned and unlearned by the people and consequences of offerings to say sorry, feasts to say thank you.
We heard the wisdom of the prophets, the great leaders who kept the sense of nationhood despite wars and oppression; the destruction of the temple and its rebuilding – symbolic of the rebuilding of a returned nation from exile. And we were introduced to the wait – the promise of a messiah to come and the sensation that we all share in as we once again wait for Christs return.
A great day was had by all. Tired (but not hungry!), the attendees bought the specialist bibles and extra books to take home to go with the course book and asked when we’d be running the New Testament version – sometime next year I hope!
