An unforgettable Experience
Having been a Lay Reader for years and being in charge of local churches when there was no vicar in the parish, many of the members suggested that I should be ordained. In my role as teacher and preparing for Sundays, there wasn’t much time for anything else and the idea of going away to study for a few years was impossible. My heart is here in the countryside where I was born and raised.
It was a great honour to be ordained deacon in 2016 and be a curate in my own home area. After two years, and many valuable experiences, I had the opportunity of being a full-time priest, and indeed it was a great privilege. Teaching was an important part of my life and I was very happy to work in the company of children, but the call was so strong that I could not turn down this opportunity.
Changing the course of my life was an unforgettable experience and very difficult, but serving amongst friends was wonderful and I had the support of all the church members.
The next step came quickly. In 2020 I was called to be LMA Dean and parish priest in another area. Yes, a fantastic opportunity BUT, after two Sundays of services, COVID arrived and I had not even been able to lead services in all of the six churches. It was a nightmare. I didn’t know many people and had no connection with them. At the time it was a mistake to accept the call and that is how I felt for many months. I must say that I am grateful for Zoom services and that was how I got to meet many members for the first time. I had finished teaching also and felt very sad that I could not even go to the schools in the parish.
But with God’s grace and help my life is now full of privilege and joy with members from the six churches being so supportive and it is good to work and socialise within the new areas even though I am not a part of the churches of my childhood. But time goes on and the world changes and if you are willing to listen to God’s calling you will receive invaluable things in your life.
