Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Prayer

Prayer sustains our human relationship with God and may involve words (formal or informal) or be silent. Prayer can involve adoration (‘I love you’), confession (‘sorry’), thanksgiving and supplication (‘please’).

Happy birthday, Plant Dewi

Plant Dewi celebrated its 20th anniversary on 9th May, with the blessing of a candle and a prayer by Bishop Joanna at the Plant Dewi headquarters in Carmarthen. Staff, trustees and supporters came together to mark the occasion and the start of the candle’s journey around the diocese.

Throughout the summer, Family Centres and Plant Dewi Projects will each host an event to mark the anniversary, inviting local families and clergy to come together in celebration and prayer. Colourful paper handprints will also be created for a Plant Dewi family tree which will be displayed at the Cathedral Fun Day on 3rd September, and which will provide a visual image of just how far the branches of support stretch across the diocese.

All the events will be featured on the Plant Dewi Facebook page. As part of the celebrations the Carmarthen Plant Dewi support group will be hosting a summer fair event on Saturday 18thJune in St Peter’s Hall, 10am-12pm, where a raffle, stalls and cakes will be available. Entry will be £3 each and a warm welcome is extended to all.

The Plant Dewi Anniversary Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, you are the light which the darkness of the world can never extinguish.

We light this Candle in thanksgiving for the light of faith, hope and love which Plant Dewi has brought to children and young people, their families and communities over these past twenty years.

May the Candle's Journey aroundour projects and parishes be a sign of our ongoing commitment to let the light shine and cast out darkness by nurturing children, strengthening families and building communities.

May this Candle be a light of blessing to all in the family of Plant Dewi.
