Bishop

‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishop is a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.

Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Priest

‘Priest’ comes from the Greek word for ‘elder’. Priests in the Church in Wales are those authorised specifically to proclaim forgiveness of sins, preside at the Eucharist and bless God’s people, as well as other responsibilities.

New Children, Youth & Families Missioner appointed

Revd Sophie Whitmarsh has been appointed Diocesan Children, Youth and Families Missioner and Priest-in-Charge in the LMA of Daugleddau, with primary pastoral care for Wiston, Walton East and Llawhaden.

Sophie is currently serving as Minor Canon (Assistant Curate) at St Davids Cathedral and will finish there on Sunday 13th February 2022, before moving to Llawhaden Vicarage. She will be licensed by the Bishop on Thursday 24th March 2022 in St Aidan’s Church, Llawhaden at 7.00pm

Sophie will work alongside a taskforce, commissioned by Bishop Joanna in 2019, to look at children, youth and families work in the diocese. with representatives from the Education Directorate, the Diocesan Council for Social Responsibility, Plant Dewi, the 4th Archdeaconry and others with appropriate expertise and interests.

The brief is to bring together the disparate elements within the diocese that work in the areas of children, youth and families (CYF) to provide a more holistic approach for the future.

Please pray her for husband Andy and daughters Chloe, Katie and Rachel as they prepare to move to their new home, and especially for Sophie as she prepares to take up the new role of Children Youth and Families Missioner in the Diocese and her new role as Priest-in Charge. Please pray also for those churches where she will serve.
