Dewi's Acre
St Davids Community Garden
Dewi’s Acre / Erw Dewi is a new Community Garden in St Davids on The Close by the cathedral. EcoDewi is working in collaboration with St. Davids Cathedral on the project that will not only benefit the local community but also its local natural environment.
The vision is to create a space that can be used by community groups, as well as regulars to the cathedral and its visitors: a place for all to experience and enjoy God’s creation, and to encourage wellbeing and creativity - storytelling, pilgrimage, art & crafts, biodiversity, appreciation of and encouraging, nature, and to build and sustain habitats for local wildlife.
The garden, beside the Canonry, has had a variety of past uses, but had become overgrown with brambles. Just before Christmas 2020 a small, socially distanced band of volunteers from cathedral and community, began to spend time there, carefully clearing some of the plot and beginning to imagine what might be.
Initial funding from Keep Wales Tidy kick-started the project and the garden has been transformed from this...
...to this!
But there's still work to be done:
