Collect

A collect is a short prayer used in liturgy, for example towards the beginning of the Eucharist. It often reflects the themes of the particular season of the Church’s year. Its name comes from the idea that it ‘collects’ together the lessons of the service readings.

Diocese

‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishop exercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).

Prayer

Prayer sustains our human relationship with God and may involve words (formal or informal) or be silent. Prayer can involve adoration (‘I love you’), confession (‘sorry’), thanksgiving and supplication (‘please’).

Youth Pilgrimage 2023

Sophie Whitmarsh talks about the progress of the St Davids Youth Pilgrimage and a new scheme that will help support those who take part.

This year’s St Davids Youth Pilgrimage was a huge success and if you want to hear from those who took part, exactly what they thought of the Pilgrimage, then there is a feedback video available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/_u6iRAH-OWM .

Overall the Pilgrimage exceeded everyone’s expectations, bringing young people to either a deeper understanding of the faith they already had or, in some cases, brought them to know Jesus for themselves.

Alongside this, the children spoke about how wonderful it was to make new friends, enjoy the coastal path and get to know the staff. As a result, the pilgrimage next year is intending to grow and become more accessible to young people across the diocese. This will include hiring a coach to collect young people from the north of the diocese and bring them to St Davids.

For this to happen successfully, and so that we can involve everyone across the diocese in some way, we need your help. We need a team of people praying for the Pilgrims, we need you to encourage the young people you know to come along and experience the pilgrimage, and we need volunteers during the week to support the team.

Next years Pilgrimage will take place from the 29th July to the 2nd August.

We have put together a support/sponsorship package that will help enable more young people to take part but will also give individuals, churches and Local Ministry Areas the opportunity to be involved with the pilgrimage through prayer, correspondence and regular updates from the Pilgrims. The Angels support and sponsorship scheme will enable young people with limited means the opportunity to take part, it will build safe relationships through prayer, as Angels both pray for and are prayed for during the pilgrimage. Angels will be kept up to date with what’s happening throughout the year, and there will be daily bulletins from the Pilgrimage, to keep all Angels informed.

Keep your eyes open on the Children, Youth and Families website www.stdavidscyf.org.uk for more information about the scheme and about how you can be involved.
