Catrin Eldred describes how Plant Dewi can offer help for struggling families this Christmas
Christmas, the season of giving and receiving, the season of families gathering around a well-laden table enjoying festive cheer. Glitter on the tree, shops buzzing, pantos and plays with laughter and high spirits. For some this is just a mask upon the reality that they will face this Christmas, some will be alone, some families gathering together will only mean tension and pressures and the table will not be laden with Christmas food, as they will have to decide between Christmas gifts, food or heating.
Plant Dewi support these families all year, not only at Christmas, having to face the reality of bringing children up as parents on a low income, single parents, young mums and dads unable to provide for their newly-born baby’s essential needs. Plant Dewi will offer a listening ear to families who struggle with every day needs, offering practical support to those dealing with emotional struggles and strains.
To enable Plant Dewi to do this work they need financial assistance, and we can do this by buying Christmas Cards, arranging Christingle Services (packs available from Plant Dewi) and having collection boxes – all of this can make such a difference, ensuring those who will struggle this Christmas get the support they deserve. You may want to provide a food parcel or toys to give out to families who are struggling – imagine the smile on a child’s face this Christmas, when they see gifts under the tree. It is the season of giving and receiving after all.
Remember, the true reason we celebrate this great Christian festival is Jesus, born not in a palace but in a stable, with a manger for His bed. This Christian Christmas play enacted by so many young children, who will be Mary or Joseph, the Angel, Shepherds or Wise Men, or even Herod, will know that their home is bare, the gifts will be in short supply, and dressing up gives a glimmer of hope.
