Canon Paul to be new Archdeacon of St Davids

Revd Canon Paul Mackness

Revd Canon Paul Mackness has been appointed as the next Archdeacon of St Davids.

He will assume the post following the retirement of Ven Dennis Wight at the end of February. His installation will take place on Thursday March 22nd in St Davids Cathedral.

Canon Paul is currently Chaplain to the Bishop of St Davids, a post he has held since 2014 under successive bishops, Rt Revd Wyn Evans and, since last year, Rt Revd Joanna Penberthy.

Born in 1973 in Hampshire, Canon Paul has conducted his entire ministry in the diocese.

A graduate of University of Wales colleges in both Lampeter (Ancient History) and Cardiff (Theology), he trained for ordination at St Michael’s College (now St Padarn’s) and was ordained in 2001/02. He was made Honorary Canon in 2014 and Canon in 2015

He served his curacy in Llanelli and has since held incumbencies in the Maenordeifi Group and In Haverfordwest.

Paul is also a prominent figure in diocesan organisation and administration. He is currently Clerical Secretary to the Diocesan Conference and Secretary to the Nominations Board and Churches & Pastoral Committee. He is also Assistant Warden of Ordinands, responsible for administration.

At provincial level, he represented St Davids Diocese on the Church in Wales Review Implementation and Structural Issues groups and was provincial convenor of Nominations Board secretaries from 2012.
