RS Thomas Literary Festival
Fri 20 September - Sun 22 September
Eglwysfach, near Aberystwyth, will act as a magnet this September when the village welcomes visitors who come from all over the country to enjoy the Literary Festival that celebrates the life of the poet R S Thomas, who was once Eglwysfach’s parish priest.
There will be a range of speakers over the three days, including the former Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan, who knew RS Thomas and will speak on the nature of his Anglican faith
The distinguished poet Menna Elfyn will talk about her personal recollections of Thomas; Professor Matthew Jarvis will discuss the perhaps unexpected topic of RS Thomas – Love Poet and Professor Tony Brown will discuss the life of Mildred ‘Elsi’ Eldridge, RS Thomas’s wife for over fifty years and a considerable influence on the poet’s early work. She was herself a distinguished painter.
Other Thomas-related topics include Iago Prytherch’s Houses, an exploration of the farmhouses and cottages of upland west Wales by Richard Suggett of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAMW).
A walk led by RCAMW in the footsteps of RS and The Living Wells of Wales by author and photographer Phil Cope also feature.
In addition to this, the Festival is holding another Open Poetry Competition in which amateur poets are invited to write in response to the poetry of RS Thomas. The
adjudicators are the former National Poet of Wales, Gillian Clarke, and Professor
Tony Brown. Gillian Clarke and Menna Elfyn will also give a poetry reading.
