John S Davies Singers perform Stainer’s Crucifixion
Fri 30 March, 7.30 pm
The acclaimed John S Davies Singers are to perform John Stainer’s much-loved Crucifixion in the beautifully restored Parish Church of All Saints in Ammanford.
The Good Friday performance will also include other Passion music and is certain to attract an enormous audience from the diocese and beyond.
In a remarkable lifetime of musical achievement John S.Davies can claim to have done more than perhaps anyone else to maintain and enhance that choral excellence for which Wales at one time was rightly renowned.
Here in the Diocese of St.David’s we have been doubly blessed by the endeavours of a choral maestro who, as well as bringing pleasure to countless thousands of music-lovers over the years, has also uniquely underpinned the musical worship of the church with so many memorable performances of some of the greatest works in the religious repertoire.
All Saints is one of the largest churches in the Diocese, and certainly the most iconic structure in the town, was of course closed for over four years and at one time there seemed little realistic prospect of its ever being re-opened.
Then however, in what is surely an inspiring example to others in the diocese, a group of lay worshippers got together and succeeded in raising the vast sum required to finance the mammoth task of repairing and renewing the fabric of the building.
This will be the very first time for the Singers to perform in Ammanford and it is good to reflect on the fact that the quality of the restoration work to the church will be matched in every way by their renowned choral excellence.
