Gair i’r Cymry: Archwilio Testament Newydd 1567                                             [The Word to the Welsh: exploring the 1567 New Testament]

Trosolog / Overview

Yng nghanol yr unfed ganrif ar bymtheg, brwydrodd William Salesbury yn daer ar i’r Cymry gael darllen Gair Duw yn eu mamiaith – “yr yscrythur lan yn ych iaith”. Un o’i weithiau pwysicaf oedd Kynniver llith a ban, sef cyfieithiad i’r Gymraeg o’r Epistolau a’r Efengylau a benodwyd yn Llyfr Gweddi Gyffredin Saesneg 1549. Fodd bynnag, cofiwn amdano yn bennaf oll am y gwaith arloesol a wnaeth ef, ochr yn ochr â’r clerigwr, Thomas Huet a Richard Davies, Esgob Tyddewi, ym Mhalas yr Esgob yn Abergwili, i gyfieithu’r Testament Newydd a’r Llyfr Gweddi i’r Gymraeg. Mae’r ddwy gyfrol yn gerrig filltir yn hanes Cymru o ran diwinyddiaeth, litwrgi a datblygiad yr iaith a phwrpas y diwrnod hwn fydd cael cyfle i ystyried y cyfraniad aruthrol hwn.

During the mid sixteenth century William Salesbury fought tirelessly so that the Welsh might have the Scriptures in their own language  – “yr yscrythur lan yn ych iaith”. One of his most important works was Kynniver llith a ban, namely a translation into Welsh of the Epistles and Gospels appointed in the 1549 English Book of Common Prayer. However, he is best remembered for the pioneering work he undertook, alongside the cleric, Thomas Huet, and Richard Davies, Bishop of St. Davids, in the Bishop’s Palace in Abergwili, to translate both the New Testament and the Prayer Book into Welsh. These two volumes represent milestones in the history of Wales in terms of theology, liturgy and the development of the Welsh language. The purpose of this day is to offer an opportunity to explore this amazing contribution.

Rydym yn hynod o falch o gael croesawu naw arbenigwr yn y maes i’n hannerch, gyda’u cyflwyniadau wedi eu trefnu mewn tri chylch o dri. Bydd y cylch cyntaf yn ystyried cyd-destun y gwaith a fu’n digwydd yn sgil newidiadau ysgubol y Dadeni a’r Diwygiad; awn ati i archwilio testunau’r cyfnod yn yr ail; ac yn y trydydd ystyrir dylanwad Testament Newydd 1567 ar y cyfieithiadau a ddaeth wedyn.  Ym mhob cylch bydd y cyflwyniadau’n cymryd tua 20 munud yr un, gyda 30 munud ar y diwedd er mwyn holi’r darlithwyr.

We are very pleased to welcome nine specialists in this field to address us. Their contributions will be arranged in three cycles of three. The first cycle will consider the context of the work, set as it is in light of the sweeping changes brought about by the Renaissance and the Reformation; the second explores the actual texts of the period, whilst the third assesses the influence of the 1567 New Testament on the translations that followed. In each cycle, the presentations will take around 20 minutes each, with 30 minutes at the end to ask questions.

The day will take place entirely through the medium of Welsh. There will, however, be simultaneous translation facilities for the benefit of those who do not understand the language.

Estynnir croeso cynnes i unrhyw sydd â diddordeb i fynychu. Fodd bynnag, bydd angen cadw lle er mwyn hwyluso’r trefniadau ymarferol. Cysylltwch, os gwelwch yn dda, â Chynorthwy-ydd Personol Esgob Tyddewi, Dawn Evans, erbyn 18 Mai:

All are interested individuals are invited to attend. However, in order to facilitate the practical arrangements, it will be necessary to reserve a place. Please contact the Bishop of St. Davids’ Personal Assistant, Dawn Evans, by 18 May:
