A Pembrokeshire based volunteer reflects on the work of the Samaritans
Volunteering as a Samaritan is a challenging but rewarding experience. A common misconception is that Samaritans offer advice to their callers, but instead we listen and explore problems without judging, respecting callers’ thoughts and feelings. They are then supported to make their own decisions, as they are the best people to decide what is right for them. We give them time and space to talk things through, which can often clarify the problem. With callers considering ending their life, we can gently discuss the reasons why they feel there is no other way out of their problems. We have many callers from all walks of life. Some are lonely, some stressed by work or family situations and others have mental health problems. We listen to all, and it is a privilege to talk and be trusted by them.
