Dementia Friends in Ceredigion

A translation into English of the article by Naomi McDonagh (pictured below)

The hour-long Dementia Friends sessions are delivered as part of an Alzheimer’s Society led initiative that aims to raise awareness and understanding of dementia.

The sessions, which are led by volunteers who are trained and supported by the Alzheimer’s Society, can be delivered directly to staff in organisations and businesses, as well as social group meetings such as, YFC, WI, Merched y Wawr and lunch clubs.

Following assistance from Cynnal y Cardi, under the LEADER (Liaison Entre Actions de Développement de l’Économie Rurale) scheme in Ceredigion, Dementia Friends is now working in Tregaron and Cardigan and it is hoped that over time, they will become Dementia Friendly towns.

The project has received funding through the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

I work alongside the Alzheimer’s Society to help progress this work in Ceredigion. Communities can mean many things to many people, whether it be a town, being part of an organisation or even a group of friends but at the heart of this project, it’s about people.  People who may have lived and participated in activities in their community all their lives can suddenly feel isolated, whether it be through fear or uncertainties.  Becoming a Dementia Friend enables you to have a greater understanding as to what it might be like to live with dementia and that there are simple things we can all do, which can have a huge positive effect on the lives of those living with dementia and their carers, too.

We acknowledge and are hugely supportive of the fantastic work already being done elsewhere in the county, helping areas become and continue to be Dementia Friendly.  Through this project, we hope to establish how people’s views and attitudes change over time and help shape the future delivery of other Dementia Friendly schemes in Wales.
